Kas Hotels in Turkey
The little town of Kas is probably one of the most beautiful towns on the Turkish Mediterranean cost. It is built on the site of the ancient city of Antiphellos, which was the port of the city of Phellos situated high up in the mountains inland. The little town sits in a picturesque bay framed by two peninsulas and the majority of it’s houses are in the traditional white Greek style. When I first visited Kas in the early 1990s it was a much quieter place than it is now, although even then there were plenty of tourists, a few hotels plus a handful of restaurants. Although Kas is now quite a major tourist destination in Turkey it has lost little of it’s charm, there has been little of the mass down marketing development that you might see in some less fortunate towns on the Turkish coast.
Many have surmised the reasons for this – but it’s probably the location that has guarded Kas to some extent. Kas is still at least a couple of hours drive now from the nearest airport and the fact that there is no real big sandy beach nearby has probably kept the large hotel chains away for now. There are some great Kas Hotels though with spectacular views, great facilities and always a warm friendly welcome. We shall be listing the best of the hotels here and will feature a cross section to suit all tastes hopefully.
Kas is reached by two main airports – Dalaman is the nearest approximately 160kms away, but the new roads have decreased the transfer time significantly. The other airport is Antalya which is about 210 kms away and easily accessible by frequent coach services. Of the two you’ll find it slightly quicker to get from Dalaman airport now that they have significantly upgraded the road networks.
Kas really does attracts all sorts of visitors, you’ll find all sorts of people from backpackers, students to wealthy yacht owners, divers and hikers. Kas has also always been popular with the more well to do Turkish people, as far as foreign visitors you’ll find the usual mix but British and German tourists probably outnumbering most. It is used a base for all sorts of activities, there are some great diving sites, lots of outdoor pursuits and of course the whole area has many fascinating archaeological sites to visit.
